LIFT knows that all parents want the same thing for their children – a better future and to actively support them in achieving their dreams in school and beyond. Unfortunately, the gap between aspiration and reality means too many students from low-income families are still falling behind their higher income counterparts.
The question is why?
A new report from LIFT begins to address this. And we start at the source: parents and caregivers. A Parent’s Perspective is a look at how to better support parent and caregiver engagement to improve children’s educational outcomes.
We asked the parents we work with every day to share with us their aspirations for their children, the barriers that get in their way and the solutions that would help most. This report is a summary of what they shared.
Our hope is that based on parents’ stories and insights we can open a broader conversation about what is missing in the current discussion around parent/school engagement. That we are able to bring together K-12 educators, youth development organizations, adult-facing social service providers, local government and funders to discuss the remaining gaps and opportunities for parent and community engagement and school success.
From this discussion, we believe we can start to collaborate on solutions that will truly move the needle on educational achievement for some of our nation’s most underserved students.
