Dominga first became a part of our LIFT family in 2016 when she came to our offices in search of an organization that could help guide her and her family of five toward economic stability and mobility. Like any parent, Dominga dreams of her children growing up in a safe home with a roof over their heads, food on the table, and the support they need to excel in school. However, as a parent experiencing poverty in Los Angeles, Dominga faced daunting systemic barriers that thwarted her progress at every turn.
Before joining LIFT, Dominga encountered endless waiting lists and rejections from other organizations. The systemic barriers she faced compounded her feelings of hopelessness and depression, setting her back from achieving her family’s dreams of a better future.
With the support of LIFT, Dominga applied for ESL classes and enrolled in culinary classes at LA Trade Technical College. Even more determined to move her family toward economic mobility, she participated in LIFT’s Small Business Entrepreneurship Pilot Program through which she won an award and cash prize of $750 for her construction and painting business proposal. Soon after she landed a contract to do ongoing work for 176 luxury apartments.
Recently, Dominga’s son graduated high school and joined the business in the hopes that he can help it grow or take over. Dominga was also able to buy a house and an RV that her family uses to take vacations, and both are fully paid off due to the success of her businesses! Dominga continues to dream big, starting other small businesses that she owns and manages, like floral arrangements and event supplies. Dominga and her husband have big dreams to build an empire.
When asked what advice she would impart to her children and fellow LIFT parents she replied, “I would tell them the same advice that [LIFT has] given me, which is to continue forward, don’t stop. If you set your goals, and remain steadfast, you will achieve them. ”
Dominga’s story is a testament to the importance of building community at LIFT, which provides resources, hope, and encouragement to those striving for a better future. Dominga’s success is not just her own; it is a victory for her entire family and an inspiration for other Angeleno families.
